The Mike GoffMemorial Scholarship Fund

The Mike Goff Memorial Scholarship Fund was established shortly after Mike’s on-duty death at a downtown Petersburg, VA fire on March 19, 1982. His passing prompted significant operational and educational improvements across area fire departments. The Fund’s ongoing mission is to provide charitable, scientific, and educational support to fire, rescue, and EMS services in the localities that assisted Petersburg—specifically Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George. To date, this support has primarily taken the form of scholarships awarded to firefighters and EMS personnel serving those areas, with multiple $2,000 awards typically granted each year to individuals committed to community service in the spirit of Mike’s dedication. Funding comes primarily from donations, supplemented in recent years by ticket sales for an annual music event and BBQ fundraiser. Looking ahead, the Board aims to grow the fund to underwrite specialized regional training programs—such as the highly successful Battery Storage & Fires course, the upcoming “MAYDAY! – Man Down!” class in spring 2027, and EV fire response training—that go beyond standard departmental offerings. Your continued donations and support will help sustain scholarship awards while enabling these critical training initiatives that ultimately benefit first responders and residents throughout the greater Tri-Cities area.
